In Every Journey, A Story Worth Telling

A Small Frog on A Leaf

A tiny sky-blue frog on a sunlit beach in Madagascar. One moment, one shot, a lesson in curiosity and the beauty of the unseen. Stay curious.

A small colorful frog sunbathing on a leaf in Toamasina, Madagascar

The midday sun blazed over the white sand, making the ground almost unbearable to touch. As I wandered along the shoreline, soaking in the bright and untamed beauty of Madagascar, a small burst of color caught my eye. Nestled on a delicate green leaf was a tiny sky-blue reed frog Heterixalus madagascariensis its golden limbs glowing against the stark sand.

It was impossible to ignore. As a lover of wildlife, I was immediately drawn to its delicate beauty. There was something almost surreal about this fragile creature resting in such an exposed environment. I knew right away: I had to capture this moment.

At the time, in 2016, I was traveling with my very first camera: a Nikon D5300 (APS-C), paired with a versatile 55-300mm lens. This was my first real journey with a camera in hand, and it had completely changed how I looked at the world. No longer was I simply observing; I was invastigating, searching for light, form, and meaning in every detail.

Photographying this little Frog

I approached the frog slowly, careful not to startle it. The sand beneath me was scorching, but I didn’t care. I crouched, then lay flat, bringing my eye level to match its own. The moment felt intimate, almost like a silent conversation between two beings sharing the same space for an instant. I adjusted my settings—185mm, f/8—framing the frog in its natural pose. Then, I pressed the shutter.

I knew immediately: this was a special shot. Even years later, it remains one of my favorite wildlife photographs.

This trip to Madagascar wasn’t just another adventure. It was my second time visiting the island, but my first time as an adventurer, as someone seeking to discover rather than just pass through. With a camera in hand, I saw the world differently. Everything felt richer, more poetic. I wasn’t just moving from place to place. I was capturing moments, searching for beauty, and immersing myself in the rhythm of life around me.

Madagascar is a paradise for wildlife and nature lovers, a place where nature has evolved in isolation, creating species found nowhere else on Earth. From the towering limestone formations of the Tsingy to the dense jungles where nocturnal Aye-Aye lemurs lurk in the shadows, every part of the island held a new surprise. I met people from different tribes, learning about their cultures, their traditions, their ways of life. Every encounter was a lesson, shaping how I see the world.

This tiny reed frog, as delicate as it was, carried a greater meaning. It reminded me how fragile and interconnected our world is. Small creatures like this play a crucial role in ecosystems, often unseen yet deeply essential. Traveling teaches you to notice these details, to appreciate not just the grandeur of landscapes but also the small, quiet wonders that keep the world in balance.

Looking back, this moment wasn’t just about capturing a beautiful shot. It was about embracing curiosity, about being present enough to notice the little things that others might pass by.

That’s what I hope to inspire in others. Travel isn’t just about seeing new places; it’s about looking deeper, about understanding, about allowing yourself to be changed by what you experience. Whether it’s a vast jungle, a bustling city, or a tiny frog on a leaf, there’s always a story waiting to be discovered, if only we take the time to look.

So wherever your next journey takes you, stay curious. Observe. Listen. Let the world surprise you. Because in every journey, there’s a story worth telling.
